iPhones for everyone…
Don’t you wish you went to college in the United States? You will once you find out what they are doing for their students - it seems that they are pushing their students to buy iPhones as they claim it will aid them with their studies…
The Missouri School of Journalism in the USA has sent out letters to their students urging them to pop to their closest Apple Store to buy either an iPhone or an iPod Touch before their year starts.
The School of Journalism is claiming that the iPhone or iPod Touch units are great tools to allow them to learn better, however their reasoning behind this decision is little odd.
The school has said that although students won’t be kicked off the course if they don’t play along with the requirements, they have labelled the iPhone as a “required” course tool so that the students would be able to apply for funding.
Is the iPhone the only MP3 player left?
However, the reason that the iPhone has appeared on an academic list is due to the fact that the journalism school believes that students will need to re-listen to classes at their convenience.
As the lectures are handed out after the class in an MP3 format they feel that each student should be given an iPhone to help them to listen to the MP3. However, does it really make sense to hand out probably the most expensive MP3 player on the market when they could be given a £10 MP3 player from Aldi which would do the same job?
The Associate Dean at the Missouri School of Journalism, Brian Brooks, clearly an Apple fanboi himself, has claimed that the inclusion of the iPhone onto the letter sent to students was simply for financial reasons, although there is still very little to support the necessity for the device with the course.
“The reason we put ‘required’ on [the letter] is to help the students in financial need. There’s been some research done that shows if a student can hear that lecture a second time, they retain three times as much [information],” said Brooks.
We’re still waiting for the reasoning…
Although Brooks is grasping at straws looking for a reason to place the extremely expensive Smartphone’s on their list, there is still absolutely no reason why the MP3 player has to be an Apple product, let alone one that will get your wirelessly on to the Internet and make phone calls…
However, the Missouri School of Journalism has a flirtatious history with Apple dating back to 2005 - the School of Journalism claimed that all of its students should rush out to buy Macs.
As the school said at the time, “by the time you purchase photo, audio and video software for a PC, you probably will have spent more than you would if buying a comparable Apple computer”.
Maybe they are secretly owned by Apple?
A Stupid Requirement?
Do you think the school was being a bit ridiculous by putting Apple products on their list? Do you think they just want to look cool and attract new students? Let us know…
