Domain Names - What you should know…
Buying domain names has become just another part of everyday life, like going down to the shops to get the milk or popping to your local Blockbusters to rent a DVD. But there are some things you should keep in mind when purchasing a domain name to make sure that whole process is done properly;
Buy It All
You may spend a lot of time deciding upon whether you fancy getting your hands on .co.uk or .org but at the end of the day you are probably actually better off buying all of the different top level domains for the same prefix. Get them all from the .com to the .net and the .biz.
This is a good idea if you’re starting a business - if your business gains popularity over the coming years you don’t have to worry about someone buying a domain name similar to yours that they can use to capture any potential visitors that spell the end of the address incorrectly. Don’t let someone else benefit from your success.
Be Flexible
If you can only get hold of the domain that you want only as a .com and nothing else then perhaps you should think about changing your plans and picking a different name - the importance of owning all of the top level domains is expressed above so make sure that you are in a position to get hold of all the possible endings to your address.
Short and Simple
Keep your domain short and simple and it’ll stick in people’s minds in a way you wouldn’t believe - would you remember a site if it was called howlongisthisdomainithinkitsgoingtogoonforever.com? I don’t think anyone would…how about cvstop.com? Much easier!
Also, don’t bother throwing in any dashes or hyphens - they are unnecessary and will often make people misremember your address! Make it easy for people to find you…
Don’t Go Mental
Don’t get silly with your domain name - you won’t be allowed! You won’t be able to fill your domain name with stupid squiggles and lines - the only characters you can use are letters numbers and dashes. Spaces and symbols aren’t allowed so don’t expect to get weird on us…
Go Respectable
Go with a domain name supplier that has a history of good service. Do your research and don’t just jump in to the first service you stumble across. If you pick a company that has been there and done that for the last 10 years for example you will be gaining their experience and quality that you wouldn’t normally be getting from a new supplier with very little experience.
