Blackberry vs iPhone
The battle of the Smartphones has continued to be storming ahead at full speed between the two giants of the telecom industry - Blackberry and Apple. However, after a number of months of vicious fighting both Apple and Research in Motion have enjoyed success!
So who is the winner and how can we possibly know who to back when the companies are so kneck-and-kneck? Who is selling more units, Apple or RIM? Has Apple got the touch as they’ve just sold their billionth app or has Blackberry got enough backing to beat off the mighty iPhone?
Let’s start with Apple…
Apple have had a great start to the year - it seems that recession means nothing to these Smartphone guys at RIM or Apple…meanwhile the rest of us have to suffer with tax hikes and unemployment.
The iPhone 3G has enjoyed a massive 123 per cent jump in sales compared to the previous year - Apple have now sold 3.79 million units in the first quarter of the year due to the fact that Apple has managed to implant the device in more and more countries around the globe.
So more sales means a boosted net quarterly profit to $1.21 billion compared to $1.05 billion from the previous year…furthermore revenues obviously enjoyed a nice little boost up to $8.16 billion for the first quarter of 2009 compared to $7.1 billion from the year before.
However, when you start looking for real money earned for the company then you start wading through some murky water - the companies subscription based policy Apple manages to spread the revenues for the unit over its lifecycle - 24 months.
So what about RIM?
So things are looking up for Apple, but RIM are also sitting in a good position - they recently posted a 26 per cent increase in their fourth quarter earnings. Furthermore the company claim that the next quarter will be even better!
Shares in the company have been sitting in a nervous position for the past couple of months thanks to the current economic woes gripping the globe, but this news will come as a great relief to the company who now have shares at $49.09.
Research in Motion have announced $518.2 million earnings, up from $412.5 million compared to the previous year. Furthermore RIM have managed to increase their revenues by almost 25 per cent to $3.46 billion for Q4, selling 7.8 million units through this time.
But who is on top of the pile?
It is clear that Research in Motion has taken the lead in the race for glory - perhaps it’s because they have been in the race longer and have managed to hold on to their market share since Apple joined the fight. However, the thing to wonder is how long will they be able to hold out against the iPhone? 7.8 million units sold is pretty impressive though!
