Boosting Dial-Up Internet Connections…
Dial up connections to the Internet are pretty slow but for some people the jump up to DSL and broadband may just be too daunting – there are some tips on how to boost your speed with your dial-up connection that are easier than you might think.
• Utilise that firewall – Some programmes are adamant that they are going to connect to the Internet and update themselves. This is a serious drain of your Internet speed and you have to put a stop to the activity before you have to wait for half an hour while your email loads.
Block the non-essential programmes and software’s from accessing the Internet when you don’t want them to – software like WinAmp often try to connect to the Internet when they don’t really have to – put a stop to it…
• Forget the pictures just show me the essential bits – You have the choice of telling your Internet browser to forget showing you the pictures on a page. By doing this you will be able to load the pages much faster – if you don’t mind missing out on all the fun pictures the web has to offer.
This option should appear in the Internet Options of any browser – the option that you need to disable is the “Show Pictures” option or whatever the similar option is on different browsers.
Can you live without the pictures, no matter how unnecessary? I don’t think I could but maybe you have a different approach to Internet images…
• Don’t be so quick to delete that cache – If you were on a 50MBPS broadband network then it might be a good idea to keep an eye on your Internet cache. The pages you will be viewing will be pushing your cache to its limits and after a little time it will be taking up a lot of space.
However with a dial-up connection you don’t have to worry about filling up your cache – you won’t really have to worry about it at all. You probably don’t have enough time in the day to visit too many sites due to the load times.
• Resume that download – Dial-up connections aren’t the most stable way to connect to the Internet. Often when you are downloading a file you will find that the connection is disrupted and the time you spent downloading the file was wasted.
Get hold of a download manager with an option to pause and resume downloads so this doesn’t become an issue again…save yourself the hassle and annoyance!
These are a few simple tips to help your browsing run a little faster and easier – however you won’t be getting miraculous speeds through a simple dial-up connection.
We’re well into the twenty-first century now and maybe it’s time to think about upgrading to a broadband network and say goodbye to that dial-up connection. You won’t regret it and because of the high amount of competition from providers in the country the prices aren’t too bad.
If you can, make the change!
