If you have ever been really annoyed at being told by your computer that you have a low wireless signal then fear not because we have got a few simple steps for you to follow to boost that signal and keep your wireless network strong.
Position is the key!
You may be receiving a low signal message because you haven’t placed your wireless router in a central position. If you can, place the router in the middle of the house so that its signal is equal throughout the house. If you have it to one side of the house then the other side of the house won’t be picking up a very strong signal.
Stay away from metal objects!
By moving your router away from walls or floors as well as metal objects then you will find that your signal will be boosted – these objects will be obstructing and interfering with the signal and so the connection that you will be getting will be weaker…
Wireless repeater…
If you want to extend your wireless connection through your mansion and the router won’t reach from one wing to the other then you should get hold of a wireless repeater.
A wireless repeater will extend the signal from the router to your computer so by placing it around half way between your computer and the router you will be able to boost your signal substantially.
Switch the channel.
Wireless routers work by broadcasting their signal over a channel and sometimes you can help your signal if you change the channel that the router broadcasts on.
The whole process works a bit like a radio where you sometimes need to flick through the channels to get the best signal – it doesn’t hurt to give the router a bit of a channel change and see if your signal is boosted or not.
Pick a company and stay with them!
Routers and Network Adapters made by different companies will often be compatible and work together but you will get better results from equipment bought from the same provider.
In fact some vendors claim that you could actually get double the performance if you buy from them compared to splitting the equipment between two suppliers.
Wireless interference can cause problems…
Wireless home phones and mobile phones near your router can cause some terrible interference as the computer might not be able to decipher which signal is from the router and which is from the mobile phone or the wireless landline phone.
When buying your wireless home phone try and buy one that uses the 5.8GHz or 900MHz and you should make things a little easier for your router.
Trial and error?
Wireless networks can be sticky things and you will find that some things will work and some things won’t but it won’t cause any harm in trying different solutions…
