If you want 3G don’t get a Nokia 5800…
Bad times for Nokia – it would seem that the launch of their brand new 5800 XpressMusic phone has started its life in the United States with a bit of a bump in the road…
The news won’t be received well for the world’s number 1 handset manufacturer who have put a lot of time and effort into the handset which they are quietly hoping will be an iPhone killer.
However, the Nokia 5800 won’t be scaring the iPhone too badly as the handset is having difficulties connecting to AT&T’s 3G network.
The handset was only launched on Friday but has been pulled off the shelves while the problem persists – the phone had only enjoyed 7 hours in the sun until it was pulled. However staff are claiming that the fix will be quick.
One problem after another for Nokia…
This is not the only problem that the handset has been criticised as having – MobileCrunch has claimed that the phone’s speaker issues have also been giving the phone a hard time. Apparently the speaker is not very well protected against moisture and is therefore causing a number of issues.
However in retaliation to this issue Nokia have claimed to have fixed the issue with handsets built post-January 2009. If you bought a phone before January then you’ll be better off taking it back to Nokia and getting them to sort it out.
According to a Nokia spokesperson, Nokia’s message has been to the point and has highlighted how they are going to want to keep the time that the phone is off the market as short as possible.
“We are currently investigating the matter further to find a quick remedy to the situation. Existing customers of the 5800 XpressMusic who experience 3G signal issue with the device are advised to contact Nokia Customer Care.
“Customer satisfaction and product quality are very important to Nokia and we take all quality and customer satisfaction-related issues seriously,” announced the Nokia spokesperson.
iPhone killer? Not with that attitude…
Nokia are hoping that this new unit will be the handset to finally challenge the iPhone. They are claiming that they have already sold over a million units of the phone around the world since its launch in October 2008.
However this will be cited as a major set back for Nokia who have not had a great deal of enthusiasm for the phone in the States – launches around the world were welcomed with masses of attention but passed by fairly quietly in the States.
In Malaysia there was a concert for the launch of the handset, in the United Kingdom Paris Hilton popped over to oversee the launch and in Thailand they honoured the coming of the phone with a street fair.
However in the States the handset came but has so far been unable to conquer and this glitch won’t be helping Nokia’s efforts at all.
