LG 830 “Spyder” doesn’t want you to call the emergency services…
If you get stranded on a Motorway or you’ve broken your leg and there’s no one around to help you, you’d better pray that you don’t have an LG 830 “Spyder” on your person as they are being recalled because they fail to call the emergency services.
In the United States around 30,000 units of the LG handset have been recalled by the consumer safety regulators because a software issue in the devices is stopping users calling 911.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has claimed that the recall only involves devices of the LG830 “Spyder” touch-screen phones that were sold in the United States between September to November in 2008.
Furthermore the Consumer Product Safety Commission stated that the software versions that are failing to contact the emergency services are the T83LGV03 and the T83LGV04 versions.
LG were on the issue straight away.
After hearing the news of the 911 issues that the phones are having, LG issued a recall stating that the reasons behind the recall were that the handsets were having “difficulty sustaining a connection or have poor voice quality on calls to emergency 911.”
However LG are being praised about their reaction to the crisis as they have been ready to recall a massive 30,000 units of the handset after only having one report about the issue.
The report that brought the attention of the issue to LG and the Consumer Product Safety Commission was through a motorist in a disabled car.
The person in question attempted to contact the emergency services but the handset couldn’t maintain the call.
Networks can’t establish a GPS lock.
Further testing has shown that the 911 calls were dropped because the networks were having difficulty establishing a GPS lock on the handsets.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission are claiming that the handsets will need a software upgrade to fix the issue. Without the upgrade they are claiming that the issues will be ongoing.
As many people as possible should be returning their handsets for the software upgrade as you can never know when you will need to get in contact with the emergency services and it could be a case of saving your life or someone else’s.
If you are in the US and have a Spyder handset then have a look for your handset’s model number – it can be found underneath the battery. If you are looking for the exact software version of the handset then it can be verified on the “phone information” menu in the Spyder’s settings.
According to LG they are attempting to get into contact with each customer to schedule them in with a free appointment to get the software issues sorted out.
What do you think about LG?
Are you impressed with LG’s way of handling this issue or do you think it’s a bit ridiculous that they could release a device with such an important issue?
