Your iPhone is about to get a bit more capable as Truphone has launched a client that supports Skype. The client, developed for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch allows both Skype VoIP and messaging allowing the user to save a few pennies
“The introduction of Skype calling and instant messaging represents yet another breakthrough for Truphone. This allows Iphone and Ipod touch users to have a choice in how they stay in touch with friends and colleagues around the world—all within the one application,” said Geraldine Wilson, Chief Executive Officer for Truphone.
“What this means for Truphone’s customers is that they can now call or message all their Skype friends using their iPhone or iPod touch. This allows iPhone and iPod touch users to have a choice in how they stay in touch with friends and colleagues around the world—all within the one application,” Wilson continued.
The President of Truphone, Tom Carter, had the same feelings on the matter, highlighting the step into the future for VoIP. “Truphone believes this is one more step towards openness but more importantly a shining example of how Truphone has enabled conversations to become multi-mode - people regularly converse via text messages, instant messages as well as phone calls. With the addition of Skype and the instant messaging services, Truphone users can easily engage in these mix-mode conversations at any time across hundreds of millions of users.”
As Skype users know, Skype to Skype contact is free and the same applies for Truphone to Skype communications. IPhone users can also use Skype when not in a WiFi area and will be charged the rates of a local call.
Truphone have also announced that Instant Messaging will be supported through their client and the likes of Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk will be easily accessible for the iPhone user that has the Truphone client. The move is a highly awaited one as such instant messaging clients have proven very popular over the years and would prove to be a highly attractive feature.
This announcement is clearly a thrust from the company to become the leading provider of communications on the iPhone and iPod Touch platforms. They are looking to lead the market and grab hold of customer recognition before too many other providers join the scene. It also seems as though they have thought their business plan out as well as they will be making money on the calls that are made outside a WiFi zone when others clients could have simply chosen not to work.
Still, Skype has been on a slippery path recently and has not enjoyed complete success. In fact they have been struggling to hold customers and the new release of Skype for the Mac is a clear sign of the company attempting to reach out for new customers on operating systems that they didn’t originally focus too strongly on.
