BSkyB has given a glimpse of the future as they showed an example of the format of television in the future – 3D. BSkyB, by using nothing more than a Sky+HD box and a Hyundai 3D ready television, showed viewers that 3D lovers will soon be able to watch 3 dimensional television in their own home.
Unfortunately, special glasses will need to be worn but Sky are still very tight lipped about the technology and have admitted that the demonstration was not a launch.
The demonstration allowed viewers to watch boxing clips, football clips and rugby clips in beautiful 3D.
The move towards 3D television is highly likely and will probably be phased in over the next couple of years, however, the chance to enjoy more than two dimensions will not be a cheap one. Many people have recently spent a lot of money on a high definition television, with many more spending money this Christmas on the televisions. 3D ready televisions will be another high expense for the viewer.
However, Sky claims that the cost won’t be hitting the broadcasters very hard as the technology can be used alongside the recent high definition infrastructure.
The 3D video is made using two cameras set up next to each other connected to a moveable mirror, which again keeps costs down.
Sky’s product development director, Gerry O’Sullivan, would be connected to Sky’s HD service that is already in place. “Lots of people have seen a 3D film - we want to bring that experience into the living room. Everyone who has seen the 3D service has been blown away by it.”
“We are ready to go,” O’Sullivan continued. “It is now a question of whether customers actually want this service. But we are confident there will be a lot of interest and that a 3D service could be launched relatively quickly.”
The experience is said to be incredibly realistic. A member of the audience at the demonstration said, “One of the first shots showed a fan waving a large flag back and forth. It seemed to come right into the room and I had to resist the urge to reach out and touch it.”
Some highly anticipated films are being readied to hit the silver screen in 2009 that will be featuring the 3D experience. However, we may have to wait a little longer if the cinemas suffer the costs of installing the necessary hardware too hard.
The current economic climate is also one of the reasons why the new technology is planning on finding its way into our homes after such a short period of time since the introduction of high definition. Sky need to keep reinventing themselves in order to keep their customers interested and ready to spend money on their product.
The technology is already picking up a lot of interest in other countries around the world. Japanese cable stations are already broadcasting 3D programmes 4 times a day.
