As crazy as it sounds, the next big thing to hit Europe is set to be the disposable mobile phone which is currently retailing at only £10 without a contract!
The mobile phone is being marketed by a company called Hop-on who claim that they have received orders for over 150,000 handsets in Europe already with interest growing each and every day. If you believe all of the hype, they are on the verge of hitting the big time and will be taking on a lot more staff to fulfil the demand.
It appears that the phone is so cheap because is does not have an LCD screen and is fairly basic in its make up. While nobody is claiming that it should or could be used as a main mobile handset, it will be very useful in the event of an emergency. Interestingly it also comes with a tracking device which is inbuilt, although quite whether you would “own” the phone for long enough to make this worthwhile remains to be seen – although there are obvious attractions for looking after young children.
The potential for this device is enormous and many people are now waiting to hear about charges and how the handset actually hooks up to existing mobile phone networks. It will be interesting to see how much of this demand actually comes through because if the numbers are correct it could well be this year’s big gift idea!
Market observers are already suggesting that the handset will sell well alongside some of the more traditional handsets and looks set to be a winner in the holiday market where people are often wary of taking their traditional handsets overseas.
While many handset manufacturers are moving forward, Hop-on has taken a step back to find what could prove to be a massive winner!
