As the internet becomes ever more popular we are seeing the emergence of the wireless router as a new means of transmitting your internet connection around the home. It may seem such a simple idea, but it has the potential to improve the reliability of your internet connection and allow you to add more and more workstations!
Many of the internet service providers are “giving away” wireless routers to customers who join up for their services and the quality and speed of these routers is getting better and better. Very often the main barrier to faster connections is the wireless adapter you may have on your laptop or desktop – although is has to be said that the more workstations you add to your “network”, the slower the system will become.
However, one of the main benefits for those looking to set up business from home is the “walk about” capabilities that it offers, meaning that you can literally walk from room to room with your laptop in hand and stay connected. The emergence of the wireless router has also seen more people look to secure “office space” in their gardens, allowing them to work away from the hustle and bustle of everyday family life.
While the distance which each router can amplify your internet signal will vary between machines, there is every chance that an office in the garden away from the home would still be well within distance. However, while this mobile service is very useful there are also security issues which need to be addressed to ensure no unauthorised access.
Thankfully many of the wireless routers of today come with inbuilt firewalls and security software, although in some instances this may not be enough. Security issues are vital for any network – even your home network – as important information such as bank details, etc, could well fall into the hands of outside third parties!
