Are you sick and tired of the wires from your PC to your monitor, to your printer and any other USB connection you need to make? Would you prefer something which was wireless and allowed you to bin the cables? Wireless USB, or WUSB as it is being called, was launched at this years CeBIT Computer show and while not yet in the shops, it is just about ready to go. So it is really worth it?
If the rumours are correct the product will be priced at a very reasonable $100 and will take away the hassle of untangling those cables, but is it fast enough to make cables redundant?
Early indications show that the technology offers much increased bandwidth from that currently available via Bluetooth, with some reports suggesting Bluetooth rates of 2 Mbits/sec against 480 Mbits/sec for the new WUSB technology. Not only could the technology be used to transfer traditional data such as printer files, etc, but the seamless streaming of video material from a camcorder to your PC may not be too far away. While USB has been one of the mainstays of the computing industry for many years, it seems that the technology is in for a major revamp this year.
Slowly but surely we are seeing the vast array of external connections from and to our PCs moving to the wireless revolution. USB is the last of the major old style systems to come under the microscope and while it may take a while for the new WUSB technology to become popular, the potential for the new system is enormous. Quite where the wireless revolution will move to next remains to be seen but you can guarantee that we will see yet more new and exciting products coming to the market as we approach Christmas 2008.
