As we move further and further away from the old telecom internet cable connections of the past, and onto the wireless networks of today, questions are being asked about the security of your wireless network. Whether you are working on your own home network or you have a wireless network at work, safety should not be taken for granted.
As we see more and more incidents of hackers gaining access to wireless networks, monitoring access and copying the data transferred, many people need to take a long hard look at their systems. Is your firewall strong enough? When was the last time that you ungraded your virus software? Are you really sure that you are secure?
The problem with internet security seems to be the fact that many people deem these to be additional expenses, until they actually need them! Many people try to cut corners to keep their costs down to a minimum, and very often it is security and anti-virus software which are the first casualties. Unfortunately, this short term attitude to a long term problem has the potential to cause major problems for those who do not give it the necessary consideration. A simple laptop and free software can be used to gain access to your wireless network, from which point the hacker is as good as in your home or office, using your computer.
It has also been drawn to the attention of researchers that the majority of surfers on the internet actually use the same username and password for a whole range of security access to programs, services and websites. If you are in this situation it is vital that you look to change and vary your usernames and passwords, even if you only change once a month you are then staying one step ahead of the hackers.
Ignoring security is a massive risk, and something which may save you a few pounds in the short term but it could cost you a fortune in the long run!
