The manufacturers of the Sin watches are very committed to the innovative engineering. Now it seems like they’ve outdone themselves again with the new dive stopwatch (chronograph). Meet this Sinn U1000, the mechanical waterproof watch to approx 1,000 meters (or 3,300 feet). It is made available in either PVD black or steel.
As with other Sinn watches, this also is made from the Tegimented steel that is both more corrosion resistant and harder than the casual 316L-grade steel. The innovations like the case filled with argon gas, oil of ultra wide temperature and the copper sulphate crystals (in order to dehumidify) are all accounted for and present in this U1000. The crystal is domed sapphire, as you might expect with the anti-reflective coating.
A feature that is new is the capability using the chronograph in the underwater. It is not mentioned often, but almost all other chronographs can’t be used when submerged. The action of its buttons is too difficult to seal, and hence they are usually equipped with the locking screws in order to hold them while diving. The Sinn did manage to engineer the solution which gave a double impression that it operates down to the total 1,000 meters of U1000’s range.
They even moved the pushers and the crown to the left to isolate them in order to prevent them from digging into the wrist, and enlarged those pushers for use when wearing the gloves. Moreover, if you dive anywhere nearer to that far down, it catches cold, and you will need a pair. As this has been rated to -45° (Fahrenheit or Celsius— the two converge almost down that low), the glove-friendly buttons do make sense a lot. Sinn U1000 is even rated to 176° Fahrenheit (+80°C), which, of course, is a way warmer than you wish to get.
The movement has been based on a reliable Valjoux/ETA 7750, but the Sinn has made an innovation here too. After few modifications, this movement has the 60-minute sum at 6 o’clock position, replacing those casual 30-minute dial. Very easier to use and read. The hour counter is placed above it at 12 o’clock position. They even have the seconds subdial at the 3 o’clock position which is very unobtrusive and black-on-black. On the whole, it is a very functional, distinctive and readable face.
