had immense pleasure testing a Wireless Pinhole Spy Camera with USB Receiver. Everything you require to get going comes with the camera package and it functions well with both the normal TV and also the computer.
So what have I got in the camera kit? It has got a set of things although being a small box
• A 2.4 GHz receiver, with four wireless channels which are easy to choose, tiny antenna with one, USB socket, SMA connector, 5Vdc power supply socket, Audio/Video socket, plus a switch on/off.
• A pinhole spy camera 2.4GHz spreader fixed to one channel.
• Battery connector 9V PP3 for camera.
• One Audio/Video wire (if you like to connect it to the television).
• USB Cable (if you like to connect it to the computer’s USB port).
• Metal camera growing bracket, with raw plugs and screws.
• Software set up CD.
• Three-pin UK main power supply for receiver and camera.
• Instructions Printed.
The size of the camera is 22 x 21 x 21mm (not including aerial and battery), but the degree of robustness with which it is built is quite high. Spy cameras, generally, are very delicate; however, this camera is designed to sustain normal use. As you can see from the picture above, this camera is not bigger than 1-pence coin.
The receiver measures 68mm x 77mm x 16mm (the aerial does not add much to the size) and is a solid unit. The receiver is provided with USB socket and so you can power the receiver from your PC without needing an external power supply. This allows portability of the device and hence would be the best model for using with the laptop for field surveillance operations.
If you wish to use this device with a video recorder or TV, then you must use the external power supply given with the kit. It’s good to come across a kit which has authentic UK power supply, since most imported devices come with 2-pin inferior quality variants. The AV cable provided is compatible with most PCs, with a compound video input, however if the TV doesn’t have AV sockets, you will require a Scart to an AV adaptor.
Cam Guard Security System Software
This kit has two software packages, SOHO Surveillance Software and CamGuard Security System. CamGuard offers you the facility of setting up an alarm with the camera which will email the captured images to you whenever any motion before the camera is detected by the software. The option to detect motion is quite well designed, permitting you to properly adjust the sensitivity scale from 0 to 600 and also to set trigger areas. The camera can save the footage and snapshots to the hard drive on the computer once you trigger the software.
The screenshot provided above demonstrates the CamGuard Security System when the software is acting, displaying real footage taken from outside my window. This software is quite impressive and versatile, and also provides a lot of options to fiddle with and optimize the settings of your camera.
Soho Surveillance Software Screenshot - 4 Cameras
The software of SOHO Surveillance is offered as a bonus, free of charge, along with the kit, since it is unsupported with this package. But, this software might seem easy to use if you have a basic knowledge of computer software. However, it offers other functionalities too when compared to CamGuard Security System. SOHO software focuses more on scheduled recording than alarms or motion detection.
SOHO software cycles on all the channels when you are using more wireless cameras such that the footage from all of the cameras can be seen on a four-window preview as shown above. The one disadvantage of this software however, was a slight delay due to the receiver tuning into different channels, i.e. it is not immediate. So, you might come across blank screen in certain time fragments since the device did not record anything. But it is not really a problem as the software is a bonus which is free.
