OBJECTIVES:
* Build a public access wireless network (PAWN) from equipment and services donated by the community
* Use the Linux operating system to leverage cost and manage hardware wherever/whenever possible
* Bring high-speed wireless connectivity to the community for free*
* Equip average citizens with the required tools and knowledge to design, build, troubleshoot, and maintain wireless access nodes
* Decide on a system to collect statistics from each node
* Analyze statistics from each node in order to distribute adequate rewards for in-service time and and distribute payment for network overhead costs (see sputnik.com)
* Install high-speed wireless networks into safer locations
* Use unlicensed FCC bands for transmitting data
* Increase competition with existing transmission systems
* lower cost for the end user and the network provider
* Note: there is no such thing as a free lunch!
THREATS:
* Annoying “script-kiddi3s”
* Biased “Media” reporting
